Reviews for Yan's Family Restaurant
Review highlights
Based on 106 reviewsYan's Family Restaurant is widely praised for its authentic Chinese offerings, particularly their steamed buns, which are frequently described as flavorful, juicy, and superior to others in the Edmonton area. Customers appreciate the generous portion sizes and good value, especially in comparison to similar establishments. The menu features a variety of dishes that strike a balanced flavor profile, often noted as less salty and healthier. A common suggestion among patrons is to preorder, as popular items tend to sell out quickly and are freshly prepared, ensuring high quality. Overall, Yan's Family Restaurant is recognized for its authenticity, freshness, and consistent culinary appeal, making it a favored choice for both regular diners and newcomers seeking genuine Chinese cuisine.
We tried this place for the first time after seeing posts about it online. We went around 5 pm without ordering ahead. You should pre-order if you are looking for specific items. We got the 凉皮 (steamed cold noodle), 皮冻 (gelatinous pork skin jelly),牛肉胡萝卜 (beef and carrot) , and 三鲜包子 (three delicacies buns). Definitely great value, the portions were really big for the price especially when compared to other dine in restaurants that charge more but give smaller portions. The buns had lots of filling and very thin skin (much better than buns that are mostly dough). I would definitely go back again next time I'm in the area.
My favourite restaurant to have Chinese bums!other dishes such as sliced beef and sliced tofu are also highly recommended, not too salty like other places, healthier choices for customers
Always order ahead of the time, prefer to be a day before. Everything's freshly prepared so they like to give them a heads up to make. No matter what type of bun you choose, the best tasting bun you will have that no one come close in Edmonton.
Got there pretty early for a Saturday ~11am but already a majority of the bun flavours were sold out and they weren’t planning on making more for the day. The flavor I did get was the dill one which honestly was pretty good though not my preferred. So very juicy! So much so that it leaked in the takeout box and when you take a bite. The bun was subtlety sweet with a nice bounce.
Simply had some steamed buns... You know the food will be good as soon as you enter. No way can some place that presents itself with such authenticity could be anything below superb. It's take-out. It's simple in nature. It's amazing in flavour and value. Poets would write salacious sonnets signaling sincere sentimentality for buns like these. A great poet once wrote: My anaconda don't want none unless you got the buns, hon. There is no doubt he meant these buns in particular.
The best baozi in Edmonton! We've tried every flavour and like them all. Make sure you call ahead to reserve what you want. Prices vary by flavour most are $12 to $14 for a box which has 8 in them. If you can't read Mandarin ask for them to write in English on the box to know which is which or else it's only written in Mandarin.
Just finishing eating for the second time in as many days. This place is unreal. Takeout, debit/cash only. I suggest calling a couple hours ahead to order as the first time I went and hadn’t ordered ahead so just got whatever they had left (still amazing!). Prices are exceptionally reasonable. I highly recommend this place and will be back very soon (maybe tomorrow).
A few people recommended me to try out Yan’s Family Restaurant for their authentic Chinese Buns (Baozi) and I’ve been a regular ever since. This is the best Chinese bun restaurant in Edmonton, especially considering the value. Their pork+scallion buns stood out the most: portion, flavour, juiciness of the filling/meat and meat to bread ratio. Note that there is usually minimal service. Overall, I’d give them 8.8/10
